# What Is Outside Straight?

If you are a Poker fan, familiarization with the terms used in the game becomes essential to play comfortably and not look straight-faced when co-players use them at the table. While there are various Poker variants accessible at top casino online lobbies, it’s best to learn the basic rules and also understand each poker hand.

An outside straight refers to a poker hand of cards which has four consecutive cards but does not have the first and the last one. In this case, players miss the chance of completing a set of five cards because of the missing element.

Let’s take an example if you have a hand which looks like this: 4, 5, 6, 7, Q, then it’s an outside straight. The sequence is incomplete as you can see the run of 4 cards disjointed with the 5th card breaking the pattern. This series could either be joined by a 3 on its left side or a card with a value of 8 on the right to complete the straight.

## How to improve an outside straight hand?

Commonly used in draw poker, outside straight can be used by players to improve their hand by exchanging one or more cards for fresh ones. Now that you know that an outside straight refers to the incomplete straight of 4 cards, it means that you need a final card to be fitted at either end to hit a winning streak. So, your next question could be whether and what can be done to get a winning hand? As mentioned earlier, you will have to improve your hand on either the turn or via the draw so that you can have a hand with which you can call for a showdown.

Let’s explicate this. For instance, you have 2, 6,7,8,9 in your hand, you apparently need either a 5 or a 10 card value to make this a full run hand. Now, in a draw, if you switch out 2, you will have a better chance of completing the straight, leading to a possible win. However, several experts suggest that gambling for a straight could be a risky proposition as it often rules out the other possible options. What if you don’t get the 5 or 10 (referring to the above example)? Then, probably another 9 could come handy in helping you form a pair. In worst situations, even getting an A or K could leave some room for the high card win to come your way.

## Outside straights vis-à-vis Inside Straights

Veterans say that in most cases, players desire outside straights to inside straights as they have more ‘outs’ which can help in completing a hand brought by the probable options that would fill up the gap in the ranked set. In contrast, in an inside straight, a card from the centre of the run happens to be missing which can only be completed with that specific card. In a poker game that uses four a deck, you’ll have four suits where if you are looking for an inside card, chances are restricted to four possibilities only. On the other hand, in case of an outside straight, you have double the chance to complete the run from either end. This means you’ll have eight ‘outs’ for that hand enabling a better chance of getting at least one of the cards you need to complete the run.
